The transition

The transition to a new chapter in your life can be rocky, scary, and exhilarating.

One of the most beautiful aspects of life is the daily opportunities we have to choose the kind of person we want to be. With those choices come a variety of possibilities, along with challenges we may encounter. When presented with the chance to approach life differently from what we're used to, it's an invitation to shift our perspective and learn to adapt. This stage—one that can recur multiple times throughout our lives—offers us a unique opportunity to identify our limitations, discover how we can overcome them, and realize just how expansive we can become.

However, I’ve found that the transition phase can be quite tricky. For instance, I’ve experienced how isolating it can feel at times, along with the confusion and intimidation it may bring. The harsh truth is that the in-between stage is where we find ourselves grappling with how to become—or embrace—who we are now without longing to return to who we once were. This realization took me by surprise. As I navigated the transition, I often questioned how I could reach the place I envisioned, frequently looking back to retrace my steps. Even if that seems possible, I had to remind myself that my current situation and version of myself are what truly matter now. I found myself caught in the cycle of looking back and forth, understanding that my starting point isn’t where I was two or three years ago, but where I stand today.

This is where many of us find ourselves getting stuck in the transition. We face significant changes while still yearning to return to our past selves. It’s quite the contradiction: we strive to improve who we are now for a better future, yet we often reference our past as our starting point. If that's the case, we could technically choose any point in time as our starting position, allowing us to explore how things have shifted and what triggered those changes. But in doing so, we risk stealing time from the present, missing the opportunity to move forward from where we are now to wherever we want to be. Regardless of the progress we seek, it’s crucial to recognize the importance of the present moment. The person we are today, and the actions we choose to take now, define us; they are not a reflection of who we were five or ten years ago, nor are they a prelude to who we may become in an uncertain future. The only control we truly have is over how we spend our time now.

So, why not give yourself the chance to live in the moment truly? Why not leap and embrace who you are right now rather than who you used to be? Allow the version of yourself that is emerging to flourish and adapt to the person you are becoming.
